Hockley Community Center Special Events

  

In addition to regularly scheduled activities – knitting, crocheting, quilting, oil painting, yoga, stretching, exercise classes, cards, and dominoes – Harris County Precinct Three Commissioner Tom Ramsey’s Hockley Community Center is offering the following events and activities.

Face masks are required in the building and social distancing guidelines are being followed, especially while consuming refreshments. Frequent hand washing or use of hand sanitizer is strongly encouraged.


Pick/Bring a Game

Come in to play cards, dominoes, or a board game of your choosing on Tuesdays from 10:15 a.m. until 12 p.m. Bring your own game or choose from Sorry, Chinese Checkers, Sequence, Clue, The Game of Life, Spinner, Yahtzee, Rummikub, Battleship, Bunko and more. Call (713) 274-3220.


Genealogy

Join volunteer instructors Cindy Schild and Pamela Shepard on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 12:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. to learn how and where to trace your family history. Call (713) 274-3220 for more information.


Handwork Needle and Fiber Art

You can sew, knit, crochet, felt, stitch, tat, embroider or do bead work in the company of others who are passionate about working with needles, fabrics, thread and more on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Everyone works on their own project. Call (713) 274-3220 for more information.


Altered Book/Junk Journal

Join us as we make vintage-look journals from hardcover books or magazines on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. guided by volunteer instructor Joni Breland. Call (713) 274-3220 for the supplies list and to register.


Basic Crochet

Volunteer instructor Mary Anne McBride is teaching basic crochet stitches on Thursdays from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Please bring yarn of your choosing and crochet hooks in various sizes to class. Call (713) 274-3220 for more details.


Senior Games

Bridge has been added to the variety of games Seniors come to play at our center on Fridays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Other established games are ‘42’ Dominoes, ‘88’ Dominoes, Mexican Train Dominoes, and Canasta. The midday potluck luncheon has been suspended for the time being. Seniors are encouraged to bring their own, individual refreshments.


German Conversation Circle

Ilse Waggoner is inviting all who want to keep up their German language skills to join a monthly conversation circle for fluent speakers on the first Tuesday of the month from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m.  “Alle sind herzlich eingeladen!” Call (713) 274-3220 for more information.


Bus Trip to Port Lavaca

Seniors will visit the Calhoun County Museum, the Ghost Town of Indianola, and the Half Moon Reef Lighthouse on the upcoming bus trip to Port Lavaca on April 15th. Lunch will be at Texas Traditions Bar and Grill and rest stops at Buc-ee’s in Wharton will be included in the trip. Registration required. Call (713) 274-3220 for details.

Advance registration for special activities is typically requested. An adult must accompany and remain with anyone under the age of 18 visiting the center.

Hempstead ISD Hosts Meet The Coach 

April 27

The Hempstead Independent School District Athletic Department welcomes the community to a Meet the Coach event at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 27, at Bobcat Stadium.

HISD will formally introduce new Hempstead High School head football coach Donovan King to the Bobcat community. 

Fans will have the opportunity to submit written questions upon entering the stadium for the coach to answer during his public address.

The event is free, and the first 150 guests will receive a snack pack.

All COVID-19 protocols will apply. Attendees must follow the six-foot distancing expectation while seated in the stands and wear their face masks, except while enjoying food or beverages.

Blood Drive

The Waller County Extension Office located at 846 6th street in Hempstead will be hosting a blood drive on Friday April 16th from 7 am to 1pm. To schedule a time to donate please email cindy.mccorkle@ag.tamu.edu or go to www.commitforlife.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/334025. All successful donations will be screened for the COVID-19 antibody. T-shirts will also be available while supplies last. Face mask will be required, if you don’t have one, one will be provided to you.


Old Salem Cemetery

Old Salem Cemetery workday and meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 22, 2021. 

Please bring the usual yard tools, i.e., shovels, rakes, saws, lopping shears, etc., as well as a lunch, chairs, and water as needed for your family.  

We will begin around 9 a.m., break for lunch and meeting when appropriate, and then continue with any remaining work. (If rained out, we will reschedule.) For questions call 281-814-6648 and leave voicemail message.


Youth Programs

Parents, are you home schooling your young ones and need more recources? Scouting has vetted leaders and programs in place that will fill most of those spaces. STEM studies, outdoor activities like camping, summer camps, day camp for the younger ones and week long camps for the older ones, along with woods skills and swimming.
